Orthoplex Multiflora is a comprehensive probiotic containing over 24 billion live bacteria per capsule. Multiflora may be of assistance in conditions associated with diarrhoea, antibiotic use, candida and poor immune function.

  • Helps support healthy intestinal flora
  • May help to support gastro-intestinal health
  • Relief or treatment of diarrhoea
  • For the symptomatic relief of medically diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome
  • May assist in the management of medically diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome
  • May help to reduce side effects of antibiotic use
  • May help maintain a healthy immune system

There are numerous species and strains of bacteria that reside in and are essential for normal gastrointestinal function. Certain species of these bacteria have been consistently promoted to restore the balance of beneficial bacteria in the human gastrointestinal tract.

Due to the large number of different species present throughout the GI tract, the use of a broad based spectrum flora complex, containing a large number of species may be more successful at restoring bacterial balance than a single probiotic.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Probiotics may have a role in alleviating some of the symptoms of IBS, a condition for which currently evidence of efficacy of drug therapies is weak (5). Probiotics may improve symptoms of IBS and can be used as a supplement to standard therapy (6).

Clinical Trial: The intestinal permeability is increased in patients with diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (D-IBS). Treatment with probiotics significantly decreased the mean global IBS scores compared with the baseline scores (9.62 +/- 1.05 vs. 7.64 +/- 1.24, P < 0.001). In conclusion, multi-strain probiotic treatment improved mucosal barrier function in D-IBS patients (7).

Reducing side effects of antibiotic use
One of the side effects of antimicrobial therapy is a disturbance of the intestinal microbiota potentially resulting in antibiotic associated diarrhea. Clinical Trial: Moreover, the intake of a multispecies probiotic significantly reduced diarrhoea-like bowel movements in healthy volunteers receiving amoxicillin (6). From this it can be concluded that probiotics containing multiple species of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria may be more effective in preventing dysbiosis influenced by ceftriaxone treatment than other probiotic preparations.

Maintaining a healthy immune system
The intake of probiotic bacteria for at least 3 months significantly shortened common cold episodes by almost 2 days and reduced the severity of symptoms. A significantly higher enhancement of cytotoxic plus T suppressor cells (CD8+) and a higher enhancement of T helper cells (CD4+) was observed in the probiotic-treated group. Fecal Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria increased significantly after probiotic supplementation (9).
