Blood Glucose and Insulin Regulation

Chronically high serum blood glucose levels can pose a
number of problems for a person, including disruption of
mood, risk of oxidative damage and glycosylation, and an
increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Diabetes and insulin
resistance are conditions in which high blood glucose levels
are seen, due to either a deficiency of insulin or a reduction
in the body's response to insulin.

Cinnamomum Cassia (Cinnamon)

Sometimes called Chinese or Indonesian Cinnamon,
Cinnamomum cassia is a more strongly flavoured cinnamon
than the 'True Cinnamon' (or Cinnamomum zeylanicum).
As well as possessing antioxidant properties, cinnamon may
help to decrease elevated blood glucose and cholesterol levels.

Momordica Charantia (Bitter Melon)

Bitter melon is a commonly prescribed herb for the support
and regulation of blood glucose levels. It is a plant indigenous
to tropical areas including India, Asia and South America. Active
constituents are charantin, vicine and polypeptide p, which may
stimulate insulin secretion, tissue glucose uptake and liver muscle
glycogen synthesis.

Chromium Picolinate

Chromium is an essential mineral that appears to have
a beneficial role in the regulation of insulin action and
its effects on carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism.
Chromium picolinate is a highly bioavailable form of supplemental
chromium and laboratory studies have proven that chromium
picolinate is absorbed better than chromium chloride.

Chromium picolinate has long been known to assist in the
maintenance of healthy blood glucose levels. Chromium forms
a complex with nicotinic acid and the amino acids cysteine,
glutamic acid and glycine, to form the organic compound
glucose tolerance factor (GTF). GTF is thought to initiate the
disulfide bridging between insulin and the insulin receptor,
potentiating the action of insulin and therefore the effectiveness
of insulin may be greater in the presence of chromium.

Biotin

Biotin improves disordered glucose metabolism by stimulating
glucose-induced insulin secretion in pancreatic beta-cells and
by accelerating glycolysis in the liver and pancreas.
Biotin deficient animals have been shown to have impaired
insulin response to glucose.

A review of evidence suggests that the joint administration
of biotin and chromium picolinate is likely to combat insulin
resistance, improve beta-cell function, enhance postprandial
glucose uptake by both liver and skeletal muscle, and inhibit
excessive hepatic glucose production.

Leucine

Leucine is a branched chain amino acid known to interact
with the insulin signaling pathway to stimulate downstream
signal control of protein synthesis, resulting in maintenance
of muscle protein during periods of restricted energy intake.
[9] Leucine appears to regulate oxidative use of glucose by
skeletal muscle through stimulation of glucose recycling
via the glucose-alanine cycle.

Diets with higher protein and reduced carbohydrate may
enhance weight loss due to a higher loss of body fat and reduced
loss of lean muscle mass. Leucine is a key element with its unique
regulatory actions on muscle protein synthesis, modulation of
the insulin signal, and sparing of glucose use by stimulation of
the glucose-alanine cycle.

Manganese

Literature suggests it is very likely that chromium,
manganese, vanadium, and selenium have a
favourable effect on carbohydrate metabolism.
Animal studies have found that dietary Manganese deficiency
can result in impaired insulin secretion producing impaired
carbohydrate metabolism; however, the timing of the deficiency
may be a critical factor in the expression of this abnormality.

Healthy Cholesterol and Lipid Levels

Cinnamomum Cassia (Cinnamon)

A randomized controlled trial has shown that 1, 3, or 6g of
cinnamon consumed per day for 40 days resulted in reduction
of triglycerides (23-30%) and LDL cholesterol (7-27%) and total
cholesterol (12-26%). The results of this study demonstrate that
intake of 1, 3, or 6g of cinnamon per day reduces serum glucose,
triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol in people with
type 2 diabetes and suggest that the inclusion of cinnamon in
the diet of people with type 2 diabetes will reduce risk factors
associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
